President Henry B. Eyring testifies that the Lord keeps His promise to help us in our trials, often through faithful disciples who reach out to others.
President Henry B. Eyring, First Counselor in the First Presidency, gave this talk, "Fear Not, I Am with Thee," in the October 2026 general conference. The full text is published in the Church's Gospel Library. He builds his message on the hymn "How Firm a Foundation," whose words come from Isaiah 41, and testifies that its promises are true.
A promise of help, not an easy life
President Eyring stresses that the Lord's promise is not that our trials will be taken away. He recalls asking his mother as a boy why life was so hard, and her answer that life is meant to be a test. She lived with serious health problems from childhood, and he describes how the promise of the hymn was fulfilled in her life.
He explains that a loving God allows mortal tests so that we can grow spiritually and become able to live in His presence. The Savior, he teaches, has carried our griefs and knows each heart perfectly. Although every person's trials differ, the question being tested is the same: will we do whatever the Lord commands?
The Lord often answers through people
Telling of his father's tender care for his mother in her final days, and of his father thanking every nurse who had helped her, President Eyring teaches that the Lord sends faithful disciples to keep His promise of help. He cites President Spencer W. Kimball's teaching that God usually meets our needs through another person.
A thank-you to those who serve
Much of the talk thanks members who already do this work and invites others to join them. He mentions:
- Praying to know whom the Lord would have you help, then reaching out when a name comes to mind.
- Encouraging missionaries, even with a few kind words or a smile.
- Praying for and expressing confidence in those serving in Church callings.
- Inviting the Holy Ghost to show how to comfort those who need it, as Alma taught at the waters of Mormon.
He closes with his witness that the Lord keeps His promises, both through the Holy Spirit and through His faithful disciples.
